DIY: Ladybug & Bumblebee Footprint Keepsakes

Time seems to disappear in a blink of an eye these days! It's so important to have sentimental pieces like this because you'll never be able to re-live those cherished years of your child's life. To make these footprint keepsakes, you only need a few ingredients and its so easy! It's a great gift for grandparents and relatives. My husband is very mushy, so its a great gift for those kind of guys too ;)

Supplies
  • Salt
  • Flour
  • Water
  • Knife
  • Rolling pin
  • Acrylic Paint: White, Black, Red, Yellow and Grey
  • Sharpie (if you want to add any wording to the back)

Directions
  1. Make Salt Dough
  Salt dough recipe:

  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 cup plain flour
  • Half a cup of warm water
  • Mix together in large bowl and knead it until smooth and stretchy. This last part is important otherwise the dough remains sticky and quite granular from the salt. If it is still too sticky add a bit more flour, if too dry and crumbly then add a tiny touch of water. A little bit of trial and error is needed but is easy to do!

2. Start out by making two small dough balls and then roll out dough on counter to create 2 separate circles (When I first made them the thicker ones were easier to make prints on but once they were baked they also rose the most.  The thinner ones had the best indention of the print once baked- they will turn out fine either way because you will be painting them which will enhance the print).

3.  Take the child’s foot and with even pressure create an impression in the dough.  (Be careful not to press to hard or you will push through the dough)

4.  With a knife carefully cut around the edges of the print.  Once it's cut out, the edges will be harsh so with your finger softly mold the edges to a rounded shape.  If needed, wet your finger with water to make the dough more workable.

5. Bake prints in the oven at 100 degrees for 3-4 hours.

6. After prints cool, paint around the edges with white to emphasize each foot print.  Paint one print yellow and one red.

7.  Once the first layer of paint has dried, turn prints upside down so that the heel is at the top and use black paint to create the details of the bumble bee and lady bug.  I used both a paint brush and tooth pick to create details. (Small amounts of white and red paint were also used in detailing) Don't forget to write your child's name on the back of the footprint along with the date!

8.  After pint has dried completely seal each print using any type of finishing spray or sealer. (modge podge, polyurethane etc.)

9. Place in a potted plant or an area of your garden. Of course, they would always look cute on a bookshelf too :) Have fun!

A Magical Day: Our Wedding

Today, my husband and I celebrate 3 wonderful years of being married! I'm so blessed to have found my soul mate and best friend. Our wedding day was one of the best days of my life. It was quite the production, here's a little sneak peak of our wedding day highlights.

United Weddings created our lovely wedding video, they were simply amazing and by far the very best purchase of our entire wedding! We got married at the church I grew up in & the reception was at The Jefferson Hotel in the Grand Ballroom. Here are some pictures from our special day, three years ago!!

A Taste of Richmond: Meet Max's on Broad

I absolutely LOVE this city! One of the many reasons being that you truly can't beat the food! My husband and I are quite the "foodies" and if there's a new restaurant to pop up- we're there! There are so many one of a kind restaurants in this town that often times you never hear about them. Just recently, we ate at Max's on Broad

The atmosphere is open with a vintage flair. Most of the artwork and decor are antiques collected from New York City. The bar has an old-city vibe with the industrial lighting and exposed beams.

There are two floors which make this Richmond restaurant extra spacious! Having a big venue is key, because you rarely have a wait & is ideal for kids and/or large parties.

Here's the upstairs…perfect for a rehearsal diner or event!

They have an awesome drink selection too! This was my favorite, its a Belgian Raspberry Beer called Lindeman's Lambic Framboise. Cheers :)

Here's what we had for Dinner (don't worry it was 6 of us):

Top Left: Salmon Napoleon. Florentine, puff pastry, lobster fennel cream, vegetables, rice
Top Right: Osso Buco. Red wine braised veal shank, vegetables & mashed potatoes
Bottom Left: Fish & Chips. Belgian beer-battered cod, fennel apple slaw, old bay remoulade
Bottom Right: Monkfish. Shrimp cream sauce, crab meat, asparagus & wild rice.
Top Left: Lobster Ravioli
Top Right: French Onion Soup
Bottom Left: Grilled Calamari. Garlic, unfiltered olive oil, white bean, red pepper, lemon, arugula
Bottom Right: Braised Short Ribs. Brussels sprouts & mashed potatoes

I sampled all of these delicious entrees. My favorites were the Calamari, Osso Buco, and Lobster Ravioli. I would certainly recommend this restaurant because of its unique atmosphere and variety of food.  If there's a picky eater in your party, they will surely be able to find something! Max's on Broad is owned by the same family that owns Tarrant's, just across the street.

Congratulations to Katie Mitten for winning a $25 gift certificate to Max's on Broad. I hope you enjoy & thanks for liking the giveaway picture on Instagram! Follow me @thehouseofholly for your chance to win upcoming *INSTA* giveaway's :)

House of the Month: A Stylish & Chic Historic Richmond Home

I'm so excited to introduce the very first House of the Month! Every month I will give you the full tour of different houses I love and ones that I've been dying to check out! This house was built in 1925 and is located in the historic district of Richmond, in a neighborhood called Laburnum Park. How cute is this turquoise front door?!

The house belongs to a friend of mine, Jenny and her precious family. Jenny is a Star Director with Stella & Dot and was my sponsor when I was with the company a couple years back. Their home was on the Historic Richmond Garden Tour in 2013. I love her style and home decor. Its chic and bright, absolutely fitting of Jenny's sweet and charming personality. Here's Jenny and her golden-doodle, Teddy. This is her favorite room--the sun room, its all windows & just off the living room! I'm loving this clear table with the coral stools underneath!
The foyer (from the front staircase). It's amazing how much fresh flowers can do for your home! Look how much color the orchids and tulips bring to this room. It's a great way to liven up the space!
Another Foyer Shot. Love the cowhide rug, gives the home a swanky feel and also gives great texture to the room.

In the Foyer looking towards the back of their house into the hallway that leads to the kitchen. How amazing is this turquoise and gold stencil?! I just love this design :)

Close-Up of the wall stencil, which goes all the way up the vaulted wall.

This family room sums up the definition of chic. I love the elegant gold coffee table coupled with the comfy white sofa and bold accent pillows. The clear table (to the left) gives is a trendy and modern look and the stools underneath are practical for entertaining & storage.

A close-up of this Fabulous Table, dressed with all the perfect accessories!

The family room connects to the foyer, dining room & sun room. These chairs are stunning! I love the mirrored piece in the corner. Mirrors always help to make the room look bigger!

Check out this vibrant dining room! The neutral wall & panels make all the colors really pop! I love the upholstered chairs & the accent pattern on the back. The chandelier is fabulous-although the moroccan pattern is overlapping in this shot.

All white everything!! For a clean & crisp look, white is the way to go! How gorgeous is this kitchen? I love the white cabinets & the white/grey marble countertops!

This morning nook is genius, especially for tight spaces! Great for kids!

Obsessed with this black & white striped chandelier and the kids framed artwork- adds such character to a home.

Downstairs Half Bathroom. Loving this gold & black geometric wallpaper! Ideal for small spaces.

Standing on the back porch looking into the backyard, with a view of their guest house on the right.

Gorgeous landscaping with the scalloped mulch bed, outlined with bricks. The bricks make this ordinary mulch bed seem very polished.

This old Richmond house is filled with character and charm. My favorite room would have to be the family room. I just love how practical and comfy it is while being luxurious at the same time. I love the turquoise and gold accents through out the house too. She did a great job blending the rooms so they flow together nicely.

For questions about Jenny's house or suggestions for future house tours, please feel free to email me or send a Facebook message to The House of Holly! Hope you enjoyed :)

For the Love of Jewels & A Glamorous FREE GIVEAWAY!

One of my absolute most favorite things in this entire world is jewelry!!! Nothing makes me happier than a gorgeous statement necklace ;) There's no denying that I love my accessories, whether it be jewelry, knobs or a crystal chandelier ;) I'm all about anything that adds a little extra glam! I've been collecting jewelry ever since I can remember. Everywhere I travel I like to buy a piece to remember that  particular place by. My first job out of college was working for a fine jewelry store. I loved working there because I learned so much about diamonds and loved selling them too! I surely have an appreciation for diamonds and gems but lets face it, to have something big & glamorous (the way I like it), we would be talking in the millions! So the search began for jewelry that wasn't cheap looking, fashion forward, bold and wouldn't break the bank. That's when I fell in love with Stella & Dot. I sold Stella & Dot for about a year until Reagan was born. I accumulated quite the collection to use for trunk shows but I never wanted to sell any of it, because I had truly fallen in love! Now my problem was where to put all this jewelry! I already had a standing jewelry box that was full to the brim! So I looked online at a hundred different sites to see what they offered bigger than what I already had. More importantly, I really wanted to display my jewelry instead of closing it up in a box.

I found zilch, so I finally decided to DIY!! I went to Target to buy a bookshelf. Nothing expensive, just something that would look good in my bedroom and wouldn't take up a ton of space. Then, I got cork board sheets, Martha Stewart "Thundercloud" silver paint, and cup hooks. I painted the back side of the bookshelf and the cork board sheets, silver. I put the cork board sheets on both sides of the first two shelves to hang necklaces and earrings. I screwed the cup hooks into the cork board on the first shelf, for my long necklaces.

The second shelf I use for my earrings, just press the earring posts into the cork board.
